Top Weekend Getaways From Sofia — By Car, On Your Own Schedule

September 29, 2026 · 6 min read

Sofia is one of the few European cities where, in under three hours of driving, you can reach a mountain, a historic town, a monastery, or a vineyard. You don't need a long annual holiday for that — sometimes a single weekend and a car of your own are enough to completely change the scenery.

Trains and buses run on a schedule. A car doesn't. So we put together a few of our favorite short-getaway destinations, with an approximate driving time from Sofia, to help you plan your Saturday and Sunday with ease.

And if you're flying into Sofia, you can hit the road straight from Sofia Airport, with no time lost at a counter.

Koprivshtitsa — about an hour and fifteen minutes

The destination that feels closest to stepping back in time. Cobbled streets, ornate wooden Revival-era houses, and a quiet that's hard to find this close to the capital. Koprivshtitsa is easy to walk in half a day, and by evening the town empties out to the point where all you hear is the stream running through it.

A great fit for a Saturday stroll, followed by an overnight stay and a Sunday breakfast on a guesthouse terrace before a relaxed drive back.

Rila Monastery and the Seven Rila Lakes — about two hours

Rila Monastery is a destination in its own right — the architecture and murals rarely leave anyone unimpressed. For the more active travelers, though, the real reward is a bit further up: the Seven Rila Lakes, reachable by chairlift followed by a hike, offer some of the most striking views in Bulgaria.

This combination works well for a weekend with an early Saturday start — the monastery in the morning, the lakes in the afternoon, leaving Sunday free to rest or take a slow drive back through the mountains.

Plovdiv — about an hour and a half

One of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe deserves more than a quick walk-through. The Old Town with its Revival-era houses, the ancient theatre still in use for performances, and the lively center full of restaurants and galleries make Plovdiv a destination that easily fills an entire weekend.

Unlike a day trip on an organized tour, your own car lets you stay out in the center late into the evening without watching the clock for the last bus home.

Melnik and Rozhen Monastery — about two and a half hours

Bulgaria's smallest town sits tucked among sand pyramids and vineyards. Melnik is a slow-weekend kind of place — a stroll between the old houses, a wine tasting at one of the family-run cellars, and a short detour to Rozhen Monastery, perched on the hills nearby.

The distance is a bit longer than the other destinations on this list, but the drive there runs through scenic mountain roads that are worth the trip on their own.

Bansko — about two hours

Outside the winter season, Bansko is a completely different place — a quiet mountain town with good food, spa hotels with affordable day packages, and easy access to Pirin trails for lighter summer hikes. A solid choice for a weekend focused more on rest than sightseeing.

Vitosha — when you don't have a whole weekend, just an afternoon

Not every escape from the city needs an overnight stay. Vitosha is practically on Sofia's doorstep — by car you can reach Aleko or Zlatni Mostove in under an hour. A great option for a Saturday afternoon of fresh air, leaving Sunday free for whatever else you have planned.

What all of these destinations have in common is simple: you set the schedule. You stop wherever you like, leave when you're ready, and don't depend on a transfer to get from the station to the actual destination.

At Auto Aleya, we offer new Audi and Volkswagen cars with insurance included and clear terms — exactly what you need when you're planning a route across several destinations. Pick your car, book online, and let the route be the only surprise.
