Most people sign a car rental contract without reading it

There's nothing complicated about renting a car — you pick a model, book it, go get it. The problems don't come from the booking. They come at pickup, when most people are in a hurry to hit the road and skip exactly the things that end up costing them money or nerves later.
Read before you sign
A few minutes reviewing the contract are worth it — not just the daily rate, but the final price: deposit, included mileage, fuel terms, late-return conditions, cross-border travel, an additional driver. One question usually reveals everything else: "Is this the final price, or are there other charges at pickup?" The best deal is rarely the one with the lowest headline number.
"Or similar vehicle"
This phrase comes up often — and it means the model you booked can be swapped for another one in the same class. If the specific car matters to you, ask beforehand whether it's guaranteed. At pickup, check the make, model, license plate, and any requested equipment — child seat, GPS, additional driver — against what's actually in the car.
Five minutes, before you drive off
Walk around the car slowly — bumper, hood, headlights, glass, doors, mirrors, wheels, tires, rear bumper, taillights, trunk. Don't skip the roof and the door edges — that's exactly where small scratches go unnoticed. If you spot anything not recorded on the handover form, ask for it to be added on the spot — not later.
The safest way to avoid a dispute at return: photograph or film the car from every angle — all four sides, the wheels, the interior, the odometer, the fuel level. It takes two minutes and it's your proof if something goes wrong.
Tires, mileage, fuel
Check the wheels and tires for damage or unusually low pressure. Compare the odometer to the paperwork. And confirm exactly how the fuel policy works with this company — full-to-full is the most common setup, but it's not the only one. Better to know beforehand than to find out at the gas station.
Insurance — what it actually covers
"Full insurance" sounds reassuring, but it's worth asking exactly what's included: is there an excess/deductible and how much, are tires, wheels, glass, and the undercarriage covered. What happens if you lose the key or use the wrong fuel. A good contract should be understandable without a law degree — if something's unclear, ask before you sign.
The deposit
Before you get the car, it's good to know the deposit amount, that a credit card is required, whose name it needs to be under, and when it's actually released after return. These details are rarely asked upfront — and they're exactly what causes the most surprises later.
How it actually drives
Especially if the car is new to you — take a few minutes to figure out the engine start, electronic parking brake, infotainment, cruise control, parking sensors. Newer cars have more driver-assist systems than you'd expect. Better to ask the staff on the spot than to experiment while driving.
In case of trouble, at the border, at return
Save the roadside assistance number before you need it. If you're planning to cross a border — Greece, Serbia, Romania, Turkey — tell the company in advance; not every rental car can leave Bulgaria without prior permission, and sometimes an extra fee or insurance is required. And before you drive off, clarify where, when, and under what fuel and lateness conditions the car is returned — especially if it's outside working hours.
At return
Refuel as agreed, take out your personal belongings, check the trunk and glovebox, return all keys and any extra equipment. Take photos, and before you leave, make sure the handover is documented — keep a copy.
