Home for Christmas. Between the Holidays, Wherever You Like.

October 25, 2026 · 7 min read

There is a journey that begins long before you pack your suitcase.

It starts with the calendar where you mark which days you will be home. With the plans for who will be at the table on Christmas Eve. With the children’s presents that somehow have to fit in the luggage. And with that familiar feeling that, no matter where you live during the year, at Christmas you want to be close to your own people.

But coming home to Bulgaria can hold more than one good reason to travel. Christmas Eve with the family. Christmas with loved ones. And then a few days on the slopes, in a warm mineral pool, or welcoming the New Year far from everyday life.

With a rental car for Christmas picked up at Sofia Airport, the family gathering and the winter break can be part of one and the same trip.

Car Rental at Sofia Airport: Let Your Family Wait at Home

When you are coming home from abroad, the last thing you want is for someone to spend hours on the road to the airport and back. Especially in December, when there are holiday preparations, more luggage, and time you would rather spend together.

Picking up a rental car at Sofia Airport lets you head home at your own pace. You can stop for the last gift. Pick up something for the festive table. Visit relatives in another city. And when the family dinners are over, the same car can take you to the mountains.

Because comfort during the holidays is often exactly this: the freedom to arrange your days around the people you want to see. If you are flying in for the holidays, also read about coming home to Bulgaria with a car from the airport.

After the Christmas Table — A Few Days in the Mountains

Picture the next morning: the presents are unwrapped, the children ask when they will see snow, and you still have a few days free. It is a great moment for a short winter break in Bulgaria. The choice of destination depends on where you will be with your family, how much time you have, and whether everyone wants to ski.

Bansko: Mountains and Festive Evenings

Bansko suits families and groups who want to combine winter sports with walks and evenings out. The ski area is in Pirin, and the town itself lets the holiday carry on after you come off the slopes. Not everyone needs the same program: part of the group can ski while the others have time for themselves.

Borovets: Winter Days in Rila

If your holiday homecoming includes Sofia, Borovets is a natural next stop. You can set aside a few days for skiing or snowboarding instead of squeezing everything into one trip there and back. For beginners, arranging lessons and equipment in advance saves decisions on the spot.

Pamporovo: A Family Break in the Rhodopes

Pamporovo is another chance to combine the mountains with time together. While some plan their day around the slopes, others can choose a calmer program. In the evening you are at the same table again.

Vitosha: A Mountain Day Without Changing Your Holiday Plan

If your time is limited and you are staying in Sofia, Vitosha can be an idea for a separate day. Check access, the weather and which facilities are running beforehand — do not plan the trip on the assumption that every lift works.

If You Prefer a Smaller Winter Destination

You can also look at Chepelare with Mechi Chal, Dobrinishte, Kartala, Malyovitsa or Beklemeto. For these options, check what is actually on offer for your dates: open slopes and facilities, lessons, equipment, accommodation and road access. A smaller area does not necessarily mean fewer people or a guaranteed open slope.

Choose the place based on real conditions and your family’s wishes. Snow at Christmas is a wonderful bonus, but it should not be the only basis of the plan.

Or Maybe This Year You Need a Warm Mineral Pool?

Not every winter break has to start with ski boots. After flights, work, shopping and holiday preparations, sometimes the best program is a simple one: a slow breakfast, a walk, and a few hours without a watch.

Velingrad, Sandanski, Hisarya, Kyustendil and Devin are well-known destinations for mineral waters and spa breaks. Sapareva Banya is an option for a stay at the foot of Rila, and if you are staying near Sofia, you can also look at Bankya or Kostenets.

Here the choice of a specific hotel is just as important as the choice of town. Before booking, check:

  • Is there an indoor pool and suitable conditions for children?
  • What exactly does access to the spa area include?
  • Is the festive dinner compulsory, and is it included in the price?
  • Is there convenient parking?
  • What are the terms for changes or cancellation?

That way “a few calm days” will not turn into a string of extra charges and surprises.

One Holiday Stay, Several Possible Routes

You do not need to tour half of Bulgaria to make good use of your break. A better plan often means less moving and more time in one place. Sample options:

  • Christmas Eve and Christmas with loved ones, then Borovets — a few days in Rila.
  • A family gathering and a break in Velingrad — when you want to carry on the holidays calmly.
  • Visiting relatives in southern Bulgaria and a stay in Pamporovo or Devin — depending on whether you prefer skiing or spa.
  • New Year in Bansko and an extra day to get back — without turning the first morning of the year into a race against the clock.

Leave some breathing room between stops. In winter, travel time depends on the weather, traffic and road conditions.

Which Rental Car to Choose for a Holiday Trip?

Start with the people and the luggage. Two large suitcases, gifts, a pram and winter gear can quickly change your idea of “enough space”. If you are bringing skis or a snowboard, tell us how many and how many people are travelling, so we can choose a car where everything fits.

If you want 4×4 drive for winter roads, we have three options: Volkswagen Tiguan, Volkswagen Golf Variant R-Line and Audi Q3. The Tiguan and Q3 are taller and roomy for a family with luggage, while the Golf Variant offers a large boot in a more compact car.

Before you book a rental car for Christmas and New Year, check:

  • The number of passengers and whether you need child seats.
  • The real luggage space for your suitcases and gifts.
  • Whether you will bring skis or a snowboard, and how many sets.
  • Winter equipment: we offer winter tyres and snow chains.
  • Pickup and return terms in line with your flights.
  • The final price, the deposit and the coverage.

If you are considering a 4×4, remember that it does not replace proper tyres, careful driving and adapting to road conditions.

What Auto Aleya Offers for Winter Trips

At Auto Aleya we want you to know which car you are choosing and on what terms you receive it. These terms matter especially on a holiday trip:

  • A specific model, no “or similar” — you know which car is waiting for you and whether your luggage will fit.
  • New Audi and Volkswagen — cars up to 2 years old.
  • Unlimited mileage in Bulgaria — no counting kilometres on the home – mountain – home route.
  • Winter tyres, snow chains and child seats — tell us in your request what you need.
  • €250 deposit, blocked on a credit card at pickup, and insurance included in the quoted price.
  • Free change or cancellation up to 72 hours before the start of the rental period, which helps when your holiday plans change.
  • Digital contract with an SMS code, in Bulgarian and English.

You can see more about our rental fleet on the Fleet page. If you want to know what “or similar” means when renting a car, read this article.

The Holidays Are Special Enough. Renting a Car Can Be Simple.

Tell us how you are planning the trip: how many of you are travelling, how much luggage you carry, and whether after the family gathering you will continue to a ski resort or a spa hotel. That way we can discuss the right car and the equipment you need before you arrive. Pickup is at Sofia Airport or with delivery by prior arrangement.

Browse the cars and send a request for your dates at autoaleya.bg.

Because the best homecoming is the one with time for the people you miss and for the memories you are yet to make.
