Car Rental Ads: 6 Hooks and How to Spot Them

October 18, 2026 · 6 min read

A car rental ad has one job: to make you click. This article takes apart the most common “hooks” in them — what each one promises, what it is really for, and which question to ask before you pay. It applies to every company, including us.

Why you see the most pleasant part first

An ad has one second to stop your thumb. To do that, it shows the lowest number, the most beautiful car and the most reassuring word. The dates, the terms and the fees are left for after the click.

That doesn't mean every ad lies. It means the part you see first is selected, not complete.

Every offer involves three different documents: the ad, the booking page and the contract. The ad attracts, the page calculates, and the contract is the one you will come back to in a dispute. If the three say different things, find out which one is true before you pay.

Six hooks and what each one is really for

A hook is not a scam in itself. It is a way to get you to click. The problem starts when the answer to the question behind it is missing.

“From €20/day”

What it is for

To plant a low number in your memory, so you compare everything else against it.

What to ask

For which dates, which car and what rental length does this exact price apply? What is it for my dates?

“No deposit” or “deposit returned immediately”

What it is for

To remove the biggest fear — that your money will stay blocked.

What to ask

How much is the deposit for my card? When does the company release it, and how long does the bank take to show it?

“This exact car” with a photo

What it is for

To give you a sense of specificity and trust.

What to ask

Can I get written confirmation of the model, year and registration number? Is it “or similar”?

“Full coverage”, “zero excess”

What it is for

To reassure you that nothing in case of damage can touch you.

What to ask

What are the exclusions — tires, glass, undercarriage? What do I pay in case of damage?

“Today only”, “last cars”

What it is for

To take away your time to compare and speed up the decision.

What to ask

Is the car free on my dates, and will the price be the same tomorrow?

“No hidden fees”

What it is for

To look honest before you see the fees themselves.

What to ask

What is the total with delivery, airport, out-of-hours service, a second driver, kilometers and fuel?

To learn more about the third row, read what “or similar” means in car rental.

The “from” price: where the money goes

The word “from” means the lowest price in the whole tariff, not the price for you. It often applies only to long rentals, in low season, or to an older car with a mileage limit.

An example with numbers: the ad says “from €20/day”, and the small print says “for rentals of at least one month”. You choose 33 days and see €35/day, €1,155 in total. If the price were €20, the total would be €660. The difference is €495, or about 43% of the amount shown.

That doesn't prove a violation. There may be an explanation — a different package, different mileage, a different pickup place, a different model or season. But the explanation should be next to the price, not something you have to hunt for. If you can't find it in a few minutes, ask in writing.

Check once with the dates from the ad and once with your own. If the price changes, the ad is describing a different offer from yours.

“Deposit returned today” doesn't mean your money is available

The deposit is the most sensitive point, because it involves your money. That is why it is also the best hook. A phrase like “we release the deposit on the day of return” sounds clear, but it can describe three different things:

  • the company gives the instruction to unblock the amount on your card;
  • the bank actually reflects it, so the amount becomes available — which can take days;
  • if the amount was collected as a payment, the company has to order a refund, which also takes time.

So ask what exactly happens on the day of return, and what time frame may follow it. If the ad, the deposit page and the general terms name different time frames, ask for written clarification before you book.

The amount also depends on the card. Often the amounts for a debit and a credit card are different, and the ad shows only one of them. And don't confuse it with the excess: the deposit secures your obligations under the contract, while the excess is the part of the damage that stays at your expense.

A five-minute check before you pay

  1. Enter your own dates and compare the total with the one in the ad, not just the price per day.
  2. Check both a short and a long period. If the daily price jumps, the advertised price is for a different package.
  3. Find the deposit terms and write down when it is released and how much it is for your card.
  4. Open the general terms or the sample contract and look for the words “fee”, “excess”, “mileage” and “cancellation”.
  5. Ask in writing about anything that isn't clear, and keep the answer.
  6. Save a screenshot of the ad and of the offer on the booking page, with the date.

Booking online does not automatically mean a right of withdrawal within 14 days. For a rental on specific dates this right often doesn't apply, so read the withdrawal and cancellation terms before you pay.

How we work at Auto Aleya

These are the rules we try to work by. The questions in this article apply to us too.

  • You see the price for the period you chose in the booking, before you pay.
  • You book the specific car you see in our fleet.
  • We deliver the car to Sofia Airport or to an address, and the delivery terms are clarified before booking.
  • The contract is signed digitally, with an SMS code for the renter, in Bulgarian or English, and you get a copy by email.
  • The condition of the car at handover and return is recorded in a report with photos, so there are no disputes later.
  • Our cars have no advertising stickers or QR codes, because we think a customer shouldn't have to drive someone else's ad.

If anything is unclear with us, ask before you book — at office@autoaleya.bg or on +359 886 303 333.
